Jackets Host Boston College and Clemson in Season Opener

Oct. 12, 2006

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will open the 2006-07 season against Atlantic Coast Conference foes Boston College (women only) and Clemson this Saturday, Oct. 14, in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. The tri-meet is scheduled for a Noon start and will be free admission.

“Our athletes have been training hard since the start of school and are anxious to see where they are at right now,” said Tech coach Stuart Wilson. “Starting off with two ACC schools in Boston College and Clemson is a great way to do that and we will be ready come Saturday.”

Seniors Ryan Bishop and Alex Williams return for the Yellow Jackets after solid conference meets a year ago. Bishop, a native of Signal Mountain, Tenn., posted a NCAA `B’ standard time of 1:49.29 in the 200-yard individual medley during the 2006 season and swam Tech’s top time in the 200 breaststroke (2:01.65).

Williams, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., clocked a lifetime-best and NCAA `B’ cut time of 55.55 in the 100 breast at last year’s ACC Championships to finish the season with Tech’s top time in that event.

On the women’s side, senior Vesna Stojanovska returns for the Yellow Jackets. Stojanovska, a native of Skopje, Macedonia, was a finalist for the Jackets in the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly at last year’s ACC meet, but failed to repeat as an ACC champion, doing so in the 200 fly during the 2005 season. She posted two of Tech’s four NCAA `B’ standards in the 200 free (1:49.22) and 500 free (4:51.36).

Elizabeth Stowe, a junior from Lawrenceville, Ga., recorded a NCAA `B’ cut time for the Jackets in the 1650 free with a swim of 16:50.33. Junior Stephanie England also returns for the Rambling Wreck on the springboards after tallying a sixth-place finish on the platform at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships.

The Eagles will only bring their women’s team for a tri-meet with the Jackets and Clemson, while Tech and the Tigers will face off on the men’s side for a dual meet. All home meets can be followed via live results at www.ramblinwreck.com.
