Jackets Go Toe-to-Toe with No. 7 Noles

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. โ€“ย Georgia Tech softball (17-16, 2-8 ACC) took No. 7 Florida State (27-7, 6-1 ACC) down to the wire, falling 6-4 on Friday night at JoAnne Graf Field. An explosive fifth inning gave the Yellow Jackets a late lead, but the Seminoles did enough damage in their next two opportunities at the dish to escape with a victory.

Junior slugger Sara Beth Allen had the most productive day at the plate for the White and Gold with just one swing of the bat, blasting a three-run bomb for her team-leading eighth dinger of the season and ninth of her career. Junior first baseman Abby Hughes and sophomore outfielder Madison Dobbins had consistent plate appearances alongside, each going 2-for-4.

In the circle, sophomore slinger Sophia Voyles got the start, going 4.1 innings and tallying a career-high tying six strikeouts. Senior hurler Blake Neleman (5-7) entered in relief, finishing out the final 1.2 innings and receiving the loss.

How it Happened

The Seminoles jumped on top early, knocking a pair of solo shots in to bottom of the second for a 2-0 lead.

Following a pair of scoreless innings, the Yellow Jackets roared back with a four-run inning of their own in the top of the fifth. Junior shortstop Jin Sileo opened the frame with a leadoff double that came inches away from becoming her first dinger of the season. Shortly after, sophomore center fielder Ella Edgmon drove her home on a sac bunt to break the shutout. Senior catcher Emma Kauf next reached on a single, priming junior slugger Allenย for a three-run bomb to catapult the White and Gold in front, 4-2.

Florida State continued to chip away at the plate, tying things up with a two-run longball in the bottom of the fifth and reclaiming the lead with a two-RBI double for a 6-4 advantage. The Noles would keep the Jacket bats at bay in their final opportunity at the dish, escaping with the two-run victory.

Game Notes

  • Voyles tied her career high of six strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.
  • Allen belted her eighth home run of the season and ninth of her career with a three-run shot.
