Jackets Finish Commodore Challenge with a Bang

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The final day of the Commodore Challenge wrapped up on Saturday with Georgia Tech athletes claiming most of the top spots in four events.

In both the men’s and women’s one mile, Tech athletes finished ahead of the back. In the women’s one mile, Nicole Fegans (4:45.14, first), Sarah Copeland (4:51.49, third), Mary Brady (5:04.85, fifth) and Sophie Boice (5:05.54, sixth) all finished in top spots. In the men’s one mile, Zach Jaeger (4:06.42, first), Cole Miller (4:09.66, second) and Myles Collins (4:09.84, fourth) continued the streak of quick Tech milers.

Yellow Jackets women came in second through fifth in the 3000m. Claire Moritz (9:39.44, second), Liz Galarza (9:42.60, third), Abby Kettle (9:59.23, fourth) and Katy Earwood (10:04.35, fifth) all clocked top times.

The final event of Jacket dominance was the men’s 800m. Alex Thomas (1:52.45, first), Harrison Fultz (1:52.79, second), Zack Truitt (1:53.22, third), Chris Cherono (1:54.31, fourth) and Mac Bloodworth (1:54.53, fifth) all secured the top spots in the event.

“It was a good weekend in Vanderbilt for the team.  Nicole broke another school record in the 1000m.  This event’s record was last set in 1987 by Bridget Koster, now Thorne, wife of Georgia Tech’s head tennis coach, Kenny Thorne.  Freshman Riley Perlakowski was also under the school record finishing second.  Nicole and Riley then came back to both win the mile and 800m events respectively.

In the vertical jumps, Olivia and Shanty had great early season jumps, Shanty’s was a personal best. Taylor is rounding into form with two solid 2nd place finishes. And Claire had a great race in setting a big personal best.

We are seeing great progress from the team as a number of other personal bests were set,” Women’s Track Head Coach Alan Drosky said.

The White and Gold had several other podium finishers on the day. Olivia Moore finished first in the women’s pole vault with a mark of 4.10m (13’3.25”), Riley Perlakowski took the top spot in the 800m (2:12.81), John Watkins placed second in the men’s triple jump with a mark of 14.72m (48’3.50”), Taylor Grimes secured second in the women’s 60 hurdles (8.42), Jameson Miller finished second in the men’s 400m (49.04), the men’s 4×400 team took home second (3:22.63), the women’s 4×400 also secured a top spot placing third (3:55.73) and John Higginbotham glided to a third place finish in the men’s 3000m (8:16.65).

The Jackets are back in action next weekend for the Carolina Challenge in Columbia, S.C. from Jan 21-22.
