Jackets Fall in Overtime at FSU, 65-63

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Three Yellow Jackets finished in double-figures, but it wasn’t enough as No. 22 Georgia Tech fell in overtime at Florida State Thursday night, 65-63.

The Jackets, playing their third overtime game in four outings, were led by Lotta-Maj Lahtinen and Digna Strautmane each with 16 points. Nerea Hermosa, who Georgia Tech missed in the overtime period after fouling out, finished with 13 points on the night.

Strautmane opened the extra period with a bucket before Sara Bejedi answered with a three-pointer to return the lead to Florida State, 59-58. Eylia Love followed with a layup, but a 6-1 run from the Seminoles nearly sealed the win. Strautmane cut it to a one possession ballgame with 39.5 to play and the Jackets secured the defensive board on FSU’s next possession, but Strautmane’s desperation three-pointer as time expired was off the mark.

The Jackets (19-9, 10-7 ACC) came out on fire in the first quarter, keeping the Seminoles off the scoreboard for the first seven minutes to build a 7-0 lead, but Florida State slowly chipped away at its deficit. A three-point play from Lahtinen would close the first quarter for the Jackets, who went without a score until a three-pointer from Sarah Bates at 5:08 in the second frame. FSU took control of the second quarter, 20-9, to lead 28-21 at halftime.

Georgia Tech came out of intermission with a 13-2 run, fueled by a 55.6 percent shooting clip, and regained the lead on a three-pointer from Strautmane at the 5:28 mark. But FSU didn’t go lightly and battled back to setup a 40-39 contest entering the final quarter. Strautmane opened the fourth draining her second three-pointer followed by a Lahtinen bucket to give Tech a 45-39 lead, but the Seminoles worked their way back and knotted the game at 47-47. The teams would trade baskets the remainder of regulation and stood tied at 56-56 to force overtime.

For the game, Tech shot 44.1 percent (26-59) from the field, but was held to a 7-for-9 effort from the free throw line.

Florida State (15-12, 9-8 ACC) was led by Morgan Jones with 24 points and finished 17-for-23 at the charity stripe for the difference in the ballgame. The Seminoles shot 37.3 percent (22-59) from the floor.

The Yellow Jackets close out the regular season on Sunday visiting Wake Forest. Tip in Winston-Salem is slated for 1 p.m. in LJVM Coliseum on ACC Network Extra.
