Jackets Fall at No. 3 Notre Dame, 81-66

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Three Yellow Jackets posted double figures, but No. 17 Georgia Tech could not overcome No. 3 Notre Dame on the road, falling 81-66. Tech tied it in the third quarter, but the Fighting Irish continued its offensive front to capture the win.

The Yellow Jackets, playing without Dani Carnegie for the second consecutive game, shook off a slow start as Notre Dame came out with nine unanswered in the first quarter. Chit-Chat Wright, in her first collegiate start, opened Tech’s offense on the night, draining a triple at the 6:38 mark. Notre Dame would expand its lead out to 13 points, 35-22, off an Olivia Miles layup at 4:21 in the second quarter before Tech came roaring back. Zoesha Smith ignited the spark, converting a three-point play as Tech closed the half with a 14-4 run to come within one possession, 39-36, at halftime.

Kara Dunn hit a three-pointer immediately to start the third quarter, knotting the game at 39-all and Tech kept it within one possession until a triple from Cassandre Prosper setup a 48-43 tally. Dunn would cut it back to four points, 52-48, with 3:09 left in the third, but it would be the closest the Jackets would come as Notre Dame slowly built out a double-digit lead. Rusne Augustinaite would spark an 8-0 spurt midway through the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Fighting Irish.

Dunn finished with a team-high 21 points, followed by a 17-point performance from Tonie Morgan. Wright added 10 points to round out the Jackets’ in double-figures. The Jackets capitalized on Notre Dame’s 21 turnovers, converting the miscues into 22 points.

But Notre Dame dominated on the glass, outrebounding Georgia Tech, 50-25, and outscored Tech in the paint, 46-30. Liatu King led ND on the glass with 12 rebounds. Citron led the Fighting Irish offensively with 21 points as Notre Dame shot 54.8 percent from the field.

Georgia Tech returns for a brief stay at home, welcoming Clemson on Sunday, Jan. 19. The Yellow Jackets and Tigers will tip at 2 p.m. on ACC Network Extra on Tech’s annual Alumni Day.
