Jackets Earn Second School Record of the Weekend

Torrin Lawrence Final Results | Penn Relays Final Results

ATHENS, Ga./ PHILADELPHIA, PA. — On the final day of competition in both the Torrin Lawrence Invite and the Penn Relays the Jackets once again broke a school record and performed at a high level.

The school record came in the men’s 4 x 100 relay thanks to the effort from Tyson Spears, Maurice Simpson, Ryan Thomas, and Daniel Pietsch. The relay team broke a 32-year old record turning in a first-place finish with a time of 40.17 at the Spec Towns Track on the final day of the Torrin Lawrence Invite.

“Once again we had some excellent performances on day two of the Torrin Lawrence Invite. We got off to a good start with both the women and men winning the 4 x 100m relay and the men breaking the 32-year-old record in the event. The women also ran a season-best time,” added men’s track and field head coach Grover Hinsdale.

Jeanine Williams and Taylor Grimes looked very good in their 100m hurdles race.  Maurice Simpson ran a very competitive race in the 100m, and, Bria Matthews put up a very solid performance in the triple jump.”

Williams turned in a third-place finish in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 12.99, while Grimes ran a career-best time of 13.86 to earn a fifth-place finish.

At the Penn Relays, the Jackets competed in the men’s and women’s 4 x 800 relay, with the winds hitting up to 24mph.

In the men’s 4 x 800 relay, Bennett Hillier, Tyler Whorton, Avery Bartlett, Jag Gangemi ran turned in a fifth-place finish with a time of 7:32.35.

“It was incredibly windy today so the efforts aren’t reflected by the times, but both relays competed very well,” noted women’s track and field head coach Alan Drosky. “The men secured another top-five finish and the women got into the top ten, and that was the goal. We had hoped to make a run at school records, but the conditions just weren’t conducive for it.”

The Jackets will not be in competition next weekend before they head to ACCs from May 9 -11 in Charlottesville, Virginia.
