ATLANTA –
Incoming Freshman Kristi Miller was one of four players on the 2004-05 Georgia Tech women’s tennis team to participate in summer tournaments, and showed that she’s ready for her collegiate career to begin.
In her first tournament of the summer, Miller competed against other collegians of all affiliations, advancing to the Round of 16 before falling with a 2-1 record in the Michigan Tournament. She then teamed with Georgia Tech teammate Alison Silverio in doubles action and advanced to the finals before falling with a 3-2 record. In the very next tournament, Miller came back with perfect marks in both singles and doubles play, as she took home both crowns in the USTA/ITA National Harcourts, which were contested on Ohio State’s homecourts. She swept through singles play with a 6-0 record, winning the final match against Vanderbilt’s Amanda Fish, 6-3, 6-2. Teaming with Silverio again, the two finished 4-0 in doubles action, defeating Kentucky’s duo of Foster and Coventry, 8-1.
“I was really pleased with Kristi’s results this summer, as she was able to play in two of the ITF college circuit events and did very well,” said Tech head coach Bryan Shelton. “We have high expectations for her and she certainly lived up to them this summer by playing in those two events and getting into the finals in doubles the first week before actually winning both the singles and doubles the second week. I think her play just gave her a boost of confidence knowing that she could come in at the college level and have success right away.”
Silverio made an appearance in the finals of the consolation round in the Michigan Tournament, finishing the week with a 4-2 singles record and then advanced to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Hardcourts before falling to Miller, 6-2, 6-3. In the two tournaments, the sophomore had a 7-3 singles record and a 7-1 mark in doubles play. Silverio then concluded her summer play at the Western Michigan Tournament.
“Ali is just a worker,” Shelton said. “She put in a lot of hard work with me this summer and is very disciplined and consistent with her workouts. She had a plan for the summer and wanted to conclude it by playing some tournaments. She was able to do just that, playing close to 30 competitive matches, and I think that she’ll see the gains from having made the effort, playing the tournaments and having success.”
Sophomore Lindsey Stauss also competed in the three tournaments with Silverio, finishing as high as third in the USTA/ITA National Hardcourts with a 5-1 singles mark after advancing to the quarterfinals of the Michigan Tournament with a 3-1 record.
“Lindsey finished off the season so strong last year, and it was good to see her back out on the court this summer,” Shelton said. “She has continued the spiral that she is on with success, and I think that it has just kept her on track to have a huge year for us this upcoming year.”
Rounding out summer play for the Yellow Jackets was junior Kelly Anderson, who competed in three ITF $10,000 Tournaments as an amateur. She advanced to the main draw in Texas, posting a 4-1 mark in the tournament and had an overall record of 6-3 in summer action. Her top win was against Georgia’s Shadisha Robinson in the final event of the season, as she posted a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win against the rising sophomore.
“Kelly stepped up to the next level and played in some professional events this summer,” said Shelton. “I think her goal this season is to play high on the team, possibly in the No. 1 spot, and she went out there and had some wins over some of the very best collegiate players in the country to gain some invaluable experience. That is just going to help her make an impact this fall so that she can attain a high ITA ranking so that she can accomplish some of the goals that she has set for herself. I know that she really wants to be an All-American and this is something that is definitely attainable for her now.”
The Yellow Jackets begin fall play in October and start dual-match play after the New Year. The upcoming schedule and all results for the Georgia Tech team can be found on the Yellow Jackets women’s tennis team page.
