Jared Hyatt pitched a seven-inning complete game and Chris House, Wally Crancer and Matt Wieters added two RBI apiece to lead the White Team to a 9-1 victory in the Gold & White World Series Opener Monday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Hyatt allowed just one run on five hits while striking out five, while freshman second baseman Jeff Ussery had a game-high three hits and three stolen bases for the White Team.
Wieters and rookie third baseman Patrick Long each hit home runs for the White Team, while the Gold Team’s lone run came in the first inning off a home run by shortstop Michael Fisher.
With one out in the second inning, the White Team scored five runs off right-handed starter Eddie Burns to take a four-run lead. Ussery and Nick Scherer hit back-to-back singles before Ryan Tinkoff walked, loading the bases for House, who also earned a walk. Crancer then singled to single, scoring Scherer and Tinkoff, before Wieters hit a two-run homerun to centerfield to conclude the scoring in the inning.
The White Team added a run in the third inning off a solo homerun by Patrick Long, and then added three more in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 9-1. After Long singled to lead off the inning, Michael Klindt hit into a fielders choice and advanced to second on a single by Ussery. With two outs, Ryan Tinkoff doubled to score Klindt and Ussery, and then scored on a double by House.
Burns worked five innings, giving up 12 hits while striking out five. Michael Hutts pitched the sixth inning for the Gold Team, allowing no hits while striking out one.
The Jackets will continue with game two of the Gold & White World Series Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Junior left-hander Tim Ladd will earn the start for the White Team, and he will face sophomore lefty David Duncan.
