ATLANTA-Tech track standouts Chaunte Howard and Brendon Mahoney and star pitcher Jessica Sallinger were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, April 19, 2004.
Howard, a sophomore from Riverside, Calif., led the Yellow Jackets to a second place finish at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field meet, their best finish in school history. She finished first in the high jump, second in the long jump and third in the triple and 100 meter hurdles. Her leap of 6’4.75″ is the best mark achieved by an American and ties the best jump in the world this year.
Mahoney, a senior from Cumming, Ga., led Tech to a fourth place finish at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field meet. He finished in first place in both the 800 meters and 1,500 meter run.
Sallinger, a junior from Kennesaw, Ga., led the Yellow Jackets on the mound this past week with a 3-0 record and a 0.00 ERA. She began the week with her third no-hitter of the season, fourth combined, against No. 13 Alabama. The Kennesaw, Ga., native improved to 2-0 for the week against NC State, tallying her second straight shutout tossing a four-hitter and pushing her consecutive scoreless inning streak to 30 innings. She finished the week with 32 strikeouts and three walks in 21.0 innings pitched and allowed eight hits.
