THE FLATS – Georgia Tech diving competed in the first day on the Zone ‘B’ Diving Championships on Sunday with women’s 1-meter diving with Camryn Hidalgo qualifying for the NCAA swimming and diving championships in the event.
Tech had one diver, Hidalgo, competing today after Carmen Woodruff scratched to help her focus on the 3-meter and platforms events, which she also qualified for.
Hidalgo placed 11th after prelims (275.20) allowing her to advance to finals with a chance to reach the top 10 to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Hidalgo would need to gain 0.60 points on 10th place to accomplish the feat.
The first dive of finals for Hidalgo was a back 1 ½ somersault ½ tuck free (5231D). She scored all sevens on the dive with a 2.1 degree of difficulty, equating a score of 44.10, placing her in 13th after the first round of finals.
Hidalgo’s second dive was an inward 1 ½ somersault pike (403B). Hidalgo once again scored three sevens on the dive but with a higher degree of difficulty at 2.4, she scored 50.40 on the dive, placing her 12th after the second round of finals.
The third round of finals was the dive with the highest degree of difficulty (2.6) of any of Hidalgo’s dives. She performed a forward 2 ½ somersault pike (105B) and scored two 6.5s and one seven to total 52.00 on the dive, placing her 10th after the third round of finals. Hidalgo would hold this NCAA qualifying position.
The fourth dive of finals for Hidalgo was a back 1 ½ somersault pike (203B). Hidalgo scored two 6.5s and one seven to score 46.00 on the 2.3 degree of difficulty dive, placing her eighth after the fourth round.
In the fifth round of finals, Hidalgo performed a reverse 1 ½ somersault pike (303B). The dive has a 2.4 degree of difficulty and Hidalgo scored one seven and two 7.5s to earn an award of 52.80, placing her eighth going into the final round.
Hidalgo would hold strong at eighth after the final dive of the event. She performed a back 1 ½ somersault 1 ½ twist free (5233D). This dive has a degree of difficulty of 2.5 and Hidalgo scored two 6.5s and one seven for a total score of 50.00, securing eighth place.
Hidalgo will now compete on the 1-meter board at NCAAs on Thursday, March 17. She will attempt to qualify on the 3-meter board (3/7) and platform (3/8) during the remainder on Zone Diving Championships.
The White and Gold compete in the men’s 1-meter and women’s 3-meter on Monday.
