@GTSwimDive: Kimpel Breaks School Record

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech’s Alex Kimpel put his name in the record book on Sunday night, swimming the 200 breast in 1:54.91 at the Yellow Jacket Championship Qualifier.

In his last opportunity to swim a fast time, Kimpel put himself in a good position to qualify for NCAAs after setting a new school record. Moises Loschi previously set the record with a time of 1:54.95 on Feb. 27 at the ACC Championships.

“I’m very happy with how we performed this weekend,” head coach Courtney Shealy Hart said of the efforts at the qualifier. “It can sometimes be difficult to get up for a ‘last chance’ meet and swim your best time. So for Alex to swim his best time, break a school record and possibly make NCAAs is very impressive. I’m really proud of our whole team – both women’s and men’s for swimming hard and supporting their teammates. It’s been a great year, and we’re not done yet. We’re all very excited to cheer on our athletes this week at NCAA Zone Diving.”

Seven Georgia Tech divers will be in action Monday through Wednesday at McAuley Aquatic Center, as they will compete at NCAA Zone Diving and attempt to qualify for the 2016 NCAA Championships.

For the second time in program history, Georgia Tech and the McAuley Aquatic Center will serve as the host site for the 2016 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. The Women’s Championships will be held March 16-19, followed by the Men’s Championships March 23-26. Georgia Tech previously hosted the 2006 NCAA Championships and the CRC was also the site of the 1996 Summer Olympics swimming and diving competitions.
