Gomez, King Make All-ACC Men's Tennis Team

April 22, 2010

Greensboro, N.C. – Georgia Tech’s Guillermo Gomez and Kevin King have been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Team announced Thursday by Commissioner John D. Swofford.

Gomez, a junior from Alicante, Spain, who is the nation’s third-ranked singles player, made the team for the third time, also having been named ACC Rookie of the Year in 2008. He is the seventh Tech men’s tennis player to make the team three times or more. King, a sophomore from Peachtree City, Ga., ranked No. 78 nationally, is a first-time honoree.

Duke’s Henrique Cunha was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year and ACC Freshman of the Year in balloting by the league’s 12 head coaches. Brian Boland, who guided Virginia to its fourth straight unbeaten regular season in conference play and the No. 1 spot in the national rankings, was voted ACC Coach of the Year for the third straight season and the fourth time overall.

Gomez, the Yellow Jackets’ No. 1 singles player, defeated the top players from Virginia (No. 6 Michael Shabaz) and Virginia Tech (No. 60 Yoann Re), both of whom made the all-conference team, over the weekend and finished the conference schedule 8-2 in singles. Gomez is 13-5 against ranked players this year.

King, the Jackets’ No. 2 player, defeated No. 66 Luka Somen of Virginia Tech, 6-1, 6-1, Sunday and went 8-3 in ACC matches this spring. King is 11-3 in dual matches after returning to the court Feb. 17 following an eight-month layoff with a shoulder injury.

The Cavaliers placed a conference-high four players on this year’s 18-member All-ACC team, including three-time selection Sanam Singh and repeat selection Michael Shabaz. Florida State’s Jean-Yves Aubone, North Carolina’s Clay Donato, Virginia Tech’s Yoann Re and Wake Forest’s Steve Forman are other three-time selections on this year’s All-ACC team.

The ACC Men’s Tennis Championship opens today with four first-round matches. Play continues throughout the weekend, concluding with Sunday’s 11 a.m. title match.
