Rocky Face, Ga. – Paul Haley continued his successful play at The Farm Golf Club with a 4-under-par 68 Saturday, helping Georgia Tech’s 10th-ranked golf team move up to third place and within five shots of the lead after 36 holes at the Carpet Capital Collegiate golf tournament.

Tech, the nation’s 10th-ranked team, shot a 4-under-par team total of 284 to move up one spot from its fourth-place position at the beginning of the round. Clemson posted its second straight 5-under 283 and has the team lead at 10-under-par 566, one stroke ahead of Alabama (-9). Tech has a 5-under-par total of 571 is third, one shot ahead of Georgia (-4). Wake Forest (-3) holds the fifth spot.

“We got a later start off the back and got some momentum going, and we had a strong finish,” said Tech coach Bruce Heppler. “We’re in the last groups tomorrow, and if we can make some shots starting out, we’ve got a chance. You’ve got to be happy to be in this position in the first tournament of the year.”

Haley, who tied for 14th place (even-par 216) to lead Tech at last year’s Carpet Capital Collegiate, recorded seven birdies and three bogeys in matching his career-best round. Dating back to the final round of last year’s ACC Championship, the senior from Dallas, Texas, has broken par in seven of his last 10 collegiate rounds.

“I didn’t hit the ball quite as well today, but I putted much better and felt more comfortable on the greens,” said Haley. “I seem to be very comfortable on this golf course and just enjoy playing here.”

Haley, who shot a 70 Friday, is tied for fourth place at 6-under-par 138, five strokes behind Auburn’s Blayne Barber, who has carded rounds of 67-68 and has an 9-under-par total of 135.

Senior Kyle Scott shot a 1-under 71 Saturday, while senior John-Tyler Griffin added a 72 and freshman Richard Werenski a 73 to count for the Yellow Jackets. Griffin’s 36-hole total of 144 is tied for 15th individually, while Scott (74-71) and James White (71-74) are tied for 18th place at 1-over 145.

Sunday’s final round begins at 8 a.m., with the Yellow Jackets teeing off at 8:50 a.m.
