ATLANTA – Roberto Castro carded rounds of 68 and 72 for a 36-hole total of even-par 140, leading Georgia Tech into a tie for second place after two rounds of the 16th annual Golfweek/Ping Preview, three shots behind Oklahoma State.
The Yellow Jackets, who are ranked eighth in the Golfweek preseason rankings and second in the Golf World magazine poll, led after the first 18 holes Sunday after posting a four-over-par 284. Tech shot one stroke better in its afternoon round Sunday (283), but the Cowboys went four-under-par at 276 to claim the 36-hole lead at four-over-par 564. Tech and TCU (281 in round 2) are tied at 567. Texas is in fourth place at 573, and top-ranked Florida is fifth at 574. Arizona is in sixth place at 577, while Georgia and UNLV are tied for seventh at 582.
The final 18 holes will be played Monday at the Caves Valley Golf Club (7,124 yards, par 70) in Owings Mills, Md., site of the 2005 NCAA men’s Division I championship. Live scoring is available on Golfstatresults.com.
Castro, a pre-season All-American, is five shots off the pace set by Oklahoma State freshman Pablo Martin (69-66 – 135), tied for fourth. Jesse Mueller of Arizona State and Drew Pigg of TCU are tied for second at two-under-par 138.
Tech junior Mike Barbosa, the nation’s 46th-ranked amateur player after winning the Cardinal Amateur in August, followed an opening 74 with a two-under-par 68 in the afternoon round and is tied for 12th place at two-over 142. Senior Chan Song shot 71 in the morning and 73 in the afternoon and is tied for 20th place at 144, while Senior Nicholas Thompson, a pre-season All-American, is tied for 23rd place at 145 after carding rounds of 71 and 74. Junior Thomas Jordan played his afternoon round at even-par 70 after an opening 78 and is tied for 38th place at 148.
Reigning NCAA, U.S. Amateur Public Links and U.S. Amateur champion Ryan Moore of UNLV is at 3-over 143. Moore, a senior and Golfweek’s pre-season No. 1 individual, was 2-over par after his first three holes and opened with a 3-over 73 before following with an even-par 70.
