Golden, Nealy Earn ACC Players Of The Week Honors

Nov. 12, 2012

THE FLATS — Georgia Tech sophomores Jamal Golden and Quayshawn Nealy were named ACC Specialist of the Week and ACC co-Linebacker of the Week, respectively, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Monday.

Golden returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown – his second kick return for a touchdown over the last three weeks – and he broke a school record with 230 kickoff return yards in Georgia Tech’s 68-50 win at North Carolina. Georgia Tech had not returned a kickoff for a touchdown from 1998 through 2011, but Golden has tied a Tech record with two kickoff returns for scores in one season. His 100-yard kick return on the opening kickoff of the second half was the longest scoring play in the Paul Johnson era.

Nealy registered a career-high two sacks to go with six tackles (four solo tackles) in Georgia Tech’s 68-50 win at North Carolina.

It is the first ACC weekly honor for both Golden and Nealy.

Miami true freshman Duke Johnson was selected as the ACC Rookie of the Week over Tech’s Vad Lee even though the Hurricanes lost to Virginia and Lee rushed and passed for more than 100 yards in the Yellow Jacket victory.

Earlier this season, Tech’s Will Jackson earned ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week and Jeremiah Attaochu was named ACC Linebacker of the Week.

Other ACC weekly winners this week: Virginia QB Michael Rocco (offensive back), NC State center Camden Wentz (offensive lineman), Florida State WR Rashad Greene (receiver), FSU DE Cornellius (defensive lineman), Miami LB Gionni Paul (co-linebacker), UVa CB Maurice Canady (co-defensive back) and NC State CB Dontae Johnson (co-defensive back).
