GREENSBORO, N.C. –Georgia Tech senior Alex Montgomery and freshman Tyaunna Marshall were honored by the Atlantic Coast Conference with selection to 2011 All-ACC Women’s Basketball teams, as announced today by ACC Commissioner John Swofford. The accolades are voted on by the league’s “Blue Ribbon Panel,” which consists of national and local media members, as well as school representatives.
Montgomery was selected to the 2011 All-ACC second team, while Marshall earned inclusion on the All-ACC third team.
“I am very proud of both Alex and Ty for being recognized by the ACC on the all-conference teams,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “They have both been impact players on our team throughout the course of the year. We have had tremendous success because of their consistent play on both ends of the floor.”
Montgomery’s selection to the 2011 all-conference team is the fourth all-league honor of her career. She earned All-Freshman team accolades in 2008, All-ACC third team selection in 2009 and 2010, and was named the 2010 ACC Sixth Player of the Year.
The Tacoma, Wash., native has led Tech in scoring (14.1 ppg) and rebounding (8.6 rpg) for a vast majority of the season. Montgomery has tallied 10 double-doubles this season and ranks in the top 10 in the conference in several statistical categories.
Marshall, who wasn’t chosen for the league’s “Newcomer Watch List” at the preseason ACC Media Day, was one of only two freshmen chosen to one of the three All-ACC teams. The Upper Marlboro, Md., native posted the highest scoring game by a freshman in her first game during Joseph’s tenure at Tech with 18 points against Georgia State.
In her ACC debut, Marshall tossed in 24 points as the Jackets beat eighth-ranked North Carolina. She has been either first or second on the team in scoring all year and averaged 13.4 points per game for the regular season. Marshall earned five ACC Rookie of the Week honors throughout the course of the season, the most by a Tech newcomer since 1998-99.
The Yellow Jackets will begin play in the 2011 ACC Tournament on Thursday morning as the No. 5 seed and will take on the 12th-seeded Virginia Tech Hokies at 11 a.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum. The game will be televised by the ACC’s regional sports network and fans can listen to the game on WREK 91.1 or WREK.org.
