THE FLATS – Junior Tyaunna Marshall was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week after leading Georgia Tech to a 2-0 week, the conference announced Monday.
It is the third time this season Marshall has earned the weekly award. Marshall was also named the national player of the week by College Sports Madness.
Marshall averaged 32 points and eight rebounds to lead Georgia Tech to wins at Wake Forest and at home against Miami. She shot nearly 52 percent for the week and had a team-best nine steals. For the week, she had 64 points in just 71 minutes.
“Ty Marshall is very deserving of being ACC Player of the Week,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “She has elevated her game to an elite level over the past month. Her 37 points against Miami were crucial and gave our team the opportunity to win, but her defense was the difference maker. We are very excited for Ty to be recognized as ACC Player of the Week.”
In Tech’s win at Wake Forest, Marshall scored 20 of her 27 points in the first half and grabbed 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the year. She picked off a career-best-tying five steals against the Demon Deacons.
In Sunday’s comeback win over Miami, Marshall finished with a career-best 37 points to go with six rebounds and four steals. The 37 points are the most by any player in the ACC this year and are the most by a Jacket since 1999. She had two steals and fastbreak layups to tie the score and then give Tech the lead in the final 38 seconds against Miami.
Marshall and the Yellow Jackets will finish the 2012-13 regular season with a home contest against Clemson Thursday, Feb. 28, and a trip to Boston College Sunday, March 3. The ACC Tournament will begin March 7 at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C.
