Georgia Tech's Ida Neal-Smith Named to Inaugural ACC Legends Class

Feb. 22, 2005

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech alumna Ida Neal-Smith will be honored at the 2005 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament as a member of the inaugural Legends class.

The inaugural ACC Legends Brunch, presented by Food Lion and Pepsi, will honor the group of 11 former standout players — one from each ACC school — on Saturday, March 5, at the Greensboro Coliseum. Later that day, the Legends will be introduced to the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament crowd at halftime of the first quarterfinal game.

While at Tech, Neal-Smith became the first women’s player in school history to earn first-team All-ACC honors when she did so in 1989. That same season, she became the only player in Yellow Jacket history to record over 1,000 points and 500 assists in her career. Neal-Smith still ranks third all-time in the Georgia Tech annals with a 39.3 career three-point field goal percentage and is tenth with 172 steals. A 1995 Georgia Tech Hall of Fame inductee, Neal Smith ranks fifth all-time for most points scored in a season when she had 538 in her senior campaign.

A 1989 graduate of Georgia Tech, Neal-Smith currently resides in Georgia with her husband, Shelton Smith, and their daughter McKenzie. She serves as a project manager for Trammell Crow Residential and is an assistant coach for the girls’ varsity basketball team at Central Gwinnett High School.
