THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team is ranked No. 20 in the initial Campbell’s/ITA Division I Tennis Rankings which were announced Thursday. Senior Elizabeth Kilborn will begin her final spring ranked No. 39 in singles.
The Yellow Jackets finished the 2012 season ranked No. 20 after earning a trip to their 13th straight NCAA Tournament and advancing to the seventh NCAA Sweet 16 in program history.
“The early rankings are good for Elizabeth and for the team,” head coach Rodney Harmon said. “We have a very challenging dual match schedule. It is imperative for us to play well to reach our goals of making the NCAA team tournament and having at least one singles and doubles team in the NCAA individual draws. Our freshmen will need to perform well both at home and away in some tough environments. We need the steadying influence from the upperclassmen and leadership from our senior captain, Elizabeth Kilborn.”
Kilborn was ranked No. 94 in the fall and went 6-4, including a win over No. 29 Ecaterina Vasenina of USF and No. 19 Joelle Kissell of NC State. She enters the spring with 74 career singles wins and is tied for ninth on the Georgia Tech all-time singles wins list.
Georgia Tech will open the spring season and the new Ken Byers Tennis Complex against No. 72 Syracuse at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17.
