ATLANTA – The 2005-06 Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will play at least 10 games against teams that reached the 2005 NCAA Tournament and three more against schools that played in the 2005 Postseason WNIT, Georgia Tech head coach MaChelle Joseph announced Thursday afternoon.
“Our staff is excited about the upcoming season and looking forward to the challenging schedule that we have ahead of us,” said Joseph.
The Yellow Jackets will play a minimum of three games that will be televised this season, including the annual Russell Athletic Shootout against SEC opponent Kentucky on January 15.
“It’s always an honor to be featured on television, and we are excited about the coverage that we will have again this season, beginning with our matchup against Kentucky in the Russell Athletic Shootout,” Joseph said. “Whenever teams from the ACC and SEC are pitted together it is sure to be a great game, so we are thrilled to have that event televised again this season.”
After opening the season on the road at UAB November 18th, the Yellow Jackets will play a three-game homestand against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, College of Charleston and Appalachian State before traveling across town to face the Georgia State Panthers to close out the month with a 6 p.m. contest on November 30th.
Tech will open December with its first game in Athens since 1989, facing the Georgia Bulldogs on the 4th at 2 p.m., but then return to Atlanta for the remainder of the month, hosting San Diego, Tulsa, Longwood and Troy before the annual Georgia Tech/Atlanta Marriott NW Holiday Invitational takes place Dec. 30-31.
“December will be a very challenging month for us, leading into ACC play,” said Joseph. “We begin with our first game in Athens in over 15 years, and are looking forward to a great game against the Bulldogs. We’re also excited about beginning a series with San Diego and receiving a return visit from Tulsa after traveling out there last season and know that both games will be great challenges for us leading into conference play.”
The Yellow Jackets will open their annual holiday tournament by hosting Alabama State in the first round before facing either Brown and UMass on New Years’ Eve.
With the league’s expansion to 12 teams over the summer, Georgia Tech will play a total of 14 games against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents this season, including home-and-home contests against Clemson, Miami and North Carolina. The Yellow Jackets will also host Virginia Tech, Florida State, Wake Forest and Duke in 2005-06 and will hit the road for games against Virginia, Boston College, N.C. State and Maryland.
The Yellow Jackets return 12 letterwinners from the 2004-05 team, including five seniors in Megan Harpring, Cheytoria Phillips, Lauren Sauer, Kasha Terry and Jessica Williams, while welcoming three newcomers in April Phillips (Long Beach, Cal.), Tabitha Turner (Miami, Fla.), Jacqua Williams (Seattle, Wash.) and Meagan Samis (Oklahoma City, Okla.) Tech returns four underclassmen that started a majority of the Jackets’ games a season ago in Stephanie Higgs, Jill Ingram, Chioma Nnamaka and Janie Mitchell, while key reserves Daphne Mitchell and Giuliett Ancora, along with Kentrina Wilson, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in each of the last two seasons, also return.
