Jan. 12, 2013

Georgia Tech Game Notes

Georgia Tech will travel to Chapel Hill for a 2 p.m. contest Sunday with the No. 11/20 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. The game against UNC can be seen on ESPN3 or heard on WREK 91.1 FM.

The Yellow Jackets will be trying for their sixth straight win over North Carolina and Tech’s third straight win in Chapel Hill. The only time Tech has won three straight games over UNC in Chapel Hill occurred from Jan. 29, 1989 to Feb. 22, 1991.

Georgia Tech will also be returning to the site where the Jackets earned their first NCAA Sweet 16 berth in program history. Last March, Tech defeated Sacred Heart in the first round and No. 17 Georgetown in the second round of the NCAA Tournament played at Carmichael Arena. In the two NCAA games at UNC last year, then freshman Sydney Wallace scored 51 points on 60 percent shooting in only 46 minutes of action. Wallace knocked down 11 3-pointers in the two games.

In the Jackets’ last game, freshman Brittany Jackson registered a game-high 20 points and made five 3-pointers. Junior Tyaunna Marshall and freshman Aaliyah Whiteside each scored 12 points.

FIVE IS NICE
Georgia Tech has won five straight games against North Carolina, the Jackets’ longest winning streak in the series.

In 2011, Tech swept UNC for the first time since the 1990-91 season and won in Chapel Hill for the first time since 2002. Prior to winning at UNC in 2011 and 2012, Tech hadn’t won consecutive games on the Tar Heels’ home floor since the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

SWEET CAROLINA
Georgia Tech earned its first NCAA Sweet 16 berth with wins in the 2012 NCAA first and second rounds played at UNC’s Carmichael Arena.

In the first round, Tech defeated Sacred Heart 76-50 and the Jackets’ beat No. 17 Georgetown 76-64 in the second round.

FIVE FROM THREE
Freshman Brittany Jackson scored a game-high 20 points against Virginia Jan. 10 at McCamish Pavilion. The rookie tossed in five 3-pointers against the `Hoos. It is the second time this season Jackson has made five triples in a game, as she also did so against Marquette Nov. 18.

Jackson leads Georgia Tech with 20 3-pointers made this season. She ranks ninth in the ACC in threes per game with 1.7 and fifth in 3-point field goal percentage, making 39.2 percent of long distance attempts.

FROM LONG RANGE
Sophomore Sydney Wallace is already closing in on the Georgia Tech career top 10 for 3-pointers made. Entering the UNC game on Jan. 13, Wallace has made 58 career threes. Currently 10th on the GT all-time list is Christie Finney with 79, just 21 ahead of Wallace. As a freshman, Wallace made 45.
