THE FLATS –
The Georgia Tech track and field team continues its indoor season and kicks off competition in 2013 at the Crimson Tide Indoor Opener Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.

The Crimson Tide Opener begins at 11 a.m. Central Time with the women’s weight throw, followed by a full schedule of field events, the last of which begins at 4:30 p.m. CT. The first of the running events, the men’s 60-meter preliminaries, is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. CT.

Almost 50 Yellow Jackets are set to compete in 22 different events at the meet. Live results are available via the link above and on rolltide.com.

The meet will feature four top-25 teams on the women’s side, including No. 4 LSU, No. 5 Florida, No. 14 Texas and No. 24 Auburn. Five top-25 men’s squads are slated to compete at the meet, including No. 2 Florida, No. 10 LSU, No. 11 Auburn, No. 16 Florida State and No. 20 Mississippi State.

Georgia Tech is no stranger to the Birmingham CrossPlex, having competed at the one-year-old facility twice last year, and is scheduled for three additional meets at the CrossPlex this indoor season.

Heading into the weekend, sophomore Nikita Kirillov is ranked No. 21 nationally in the pole vault by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), and junior Julienne McKee is No. 15 in the long jump and 16th-nationally in the triple jump.

The Yellow Jackets had more than a month’s break from competition after the indoor season began on Dec. 1 at the Orange & Purple Winter Classic in Clemson, S.C.

At the Orange & Purple Winter Classic, seniors Perron Jones and Aaron Unterberger won their events in the 60 meters and pole vault, respectively. The Jackets recorded seven additional top-three finishes to open the 2012-13 season with success.
