ATLANTA – Georgia Tech sophomore Kristi Miller has earned a wild card from the United States Tennis Association and will play in the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, NY this week, teaming with former University of Miami standout Megan Bradley in the main draw of the doubles tournament, which begins Wednesday afternoon.
“I am so excited for Kristi,” said Georgia Tech head coach Bryan Shelton. “So many players go through college and then try to play professionally for many years and never reach a Grand Slam event. I think that it’s a testament to Kristi’s potential and also to her development that the USTA has that much confidence in her to grant her a wild card this year.”
The duo will begin the tournament by facing Columbia’s Catalina Castano and Spain’s Laura Pous Tio in the first round. Draws for the tournament are available on the U.S. Open website, or by clicking HERE
Miller and Bradley teamed together earlier this summer in the $50,000 USTA Bronx Challenger in New York, and advanced as far as the quarterfinals before being eliminated.
Following the tournament, Miller will return to Atlanta as she begins her sophomore year as a member of the Georgia Tech tennis team. The Marysville, Mich. native garnered numerous accolades in her first season on the Flats, including earning ACC and ITA South Region Rookie of the Year honors and all-ACC, Academic All-ACC and ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition. She also became the first Yellow Jacket in the history of the women’s tennis program to earn All-America honors when she earned one of the top-16 national seeds in the 2005 NCAA Singles Championships.
“Kristi has done a fabulous job representing Georgia Tech and we are all proud of her,” added Shelton. “Hopefully she can win a couple of matches this week so that we can go up this weekend and watch her compete in her first Grand Slam.”
