THE FLATS – Head coach Alan Drosky announced the 2012 Georgia Tech cross country schedule on Wednesday that features seven meets. The Yellow Jackets kick off the season at the UGA Invitational on Sept. 1.
“We’re excited about our fall schedule and the opportunities it brings,” Drosky said. “We have a mix of smaller meets where we can run more of our student-athletes, and larger, more competitive meets where we’ll focus on a smaller squad.”
Following the UGA Invitational, the Yellow Jackets run in the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. (Sept. 14) and the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky. (Sept. 29), which are two of the courses that will host postseason championships later in the season.
The Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Oct. 13 will be Georgia Tech’s final tune up before it heads back to Blacksburg for the ACC Championships. The NCAA South Regionals will be held on Nov. 9 in Tallahassee, Fla. and the NCAA Championships are Nov. 17 in Louisville.
“With the championship meets in Blacksburg, Tallahassee, and Louisville, we’ll get a chance to see two of the three courses during the regular season, which will aid in our preparation,” Drosky said.
The women’s team returns two-time All-South Regional honoree Mary Kate DuBard, along with sophomores Kelly Meyer and Katie Townsend, who put together successful seasons in 2011.
The men’s cross country team sees the return of Shawn Roberts, Obiandu Igwe and Niall Longobardi who were top finishers for Georgia Tech at the 2011 NCAA Regionals.
“The schedule is one that allows us to test ourselves in a variety of competitive settings as we prepare for the all-important championship portion at the end of the fall,” Drosky said. “The team has been preparing through the summer and is excited to finally see the competition ahead.”
