ATLANTA – Georgia Tech defensive end Greg Gathers was honored as the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Lineman of the Week for his play in the Yellow Jackets’ 40-13 win over Navy.
The sophomore from LaPlace, La., recovered a fumble and returned it six yards for a touchdown and forced another fumble that Tech recovered. Gathers had six tackles in the game, including three tackles for loss with one quarterback sack.
For the season, the 6-1, 260-pound Gathers has 17 tackles, two sacks and seven tackles for loss.
Also honored by the ACC this week were Virginia wide receiver Billy McMullen as Offensive Back (eight receptions for 189 yards and two touchdowns vs. Duke); Florida State center Jared Moon as Offensive Lineman; Virginia outside linebacker Byron Thweatt as Defensive Back (career-high 15 tackles, including 10 solo stops), Duke punter Brian Morton as Specialist (48.3 yard average with four punts inside the 20-yard line vs. Virginia) and NC State quarterback Philip Rivers as Rookie of the Week for the third straight week (completed 16 of 24 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns vs. SMU).
