COLUMBIA, S.C. – Miguel Muguruza earned the lone Georgia Tech singles victory on the first day of the South Carolina Men’s Fall Invitational at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center in Columbia, S.C.
Muguruza, a freshman from Wesley Chapel, Fla., defeated Chris Nott of Arkansas, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 in the first round of the A-2 singles draw. He moves on to the round of 16 to face the No. 1 seed Michael Nusslein of USF at 10:30 a.m.
Freshman Eliot Potvin opened the tournament with a hard fought match but ultimately fell to Vinicius Bortolatto of Winthrop, 7-6, 6-1. Potvin will face Grega Teraz of CSU in the consolation bracket on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m.
Also in first round action, freshman Doug Kenny won his first set but would eventually fall, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, to Javier Vazquez of Belmont. Kenny will be back in action tomorrow morning at 8 a.m., when he faces Dilshod Sharifi of FMU in the first round of the A/B singles consolation draw.
In doubles play, Muguruza and Potvin, ranked No. 1 in the A-1 doubles draw, fell to Predrad Burmazovic and Oscar Posada of East Tennessee State University, 8-6.
