GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech women’s basketball freshman Kaela Davis has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week for the week of Nov. 11 the league office announced Monday.
Davis had a dynamic debut during her first two games as a Yellow Jacket, recording two straight double-doubles in Tech’s wins against Coppin State and Western Carolina. Against the Eagles, Davis scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, both team highs. During game two against Western Carolina, Davis led the Jackets in scoring, recording 20 points and pulling down 10 boards.
Her 20 points against Coppin State were the most by a freshman in her first career game at Georgia Tech under head coach MaChelle Joseph.
Davis’ back-to-back double-doubles marked the first time a Tech player has had a double-double in consecutive games since senior Tyaunna Marshall accomplished the feat against NC State on Jan. 27, 2013 (16 pts., 11 rebs.) and Wake Forest on Jan. 31, 2013 (28 pts., 17 reb.).
The Suwanee, Ga., native made nine 3-pointers in her first two games, which leads the conference, and averaged 26.5 minutes per game. Davis also dished out five assists and had three steals during the opening weekend. Davis leads all ACC rookies in scoring with her 20.0 ppg and is tied for sixth in the ACC in scoring.
Davis is the first Jacket to be named the ACC Rookie of the Week following the opening weekend of the season since Marshall was named the ACC Rookie of the Week on Nov. 14, 2010. Marshall recorded 18 and 16 points in her opening weekend her rookie season.
The Jackets head to #4/4 Tennessee this Sunday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcasted live on FOX Sports South/FOX Sports Tennessee and can be heard on WREK 91.1.
