BLACKSBURG, Va. – After more than two hours of weather delays, Georgia Tech baseball would be unable to keep Virginia Tech down long enough to complete its comeback, falling 10-7 on Friday night at Atlantic Union Bank Park.
The Yellow Jackets (20-14, 7-9 ACC) opened with a 1-0 lead thanks to a Nicholas Romano sac fly in the second, but would then immediately enter a 39-minute lightning delay. Returning in the rain-soaked afternoon, RHP Luke Schmolke (4-2) struggled, allowing four runs after 1.1 innings of work.
LHP Camron Hill then went 3.0 inning, but the Hokies (19-12, 6-9 ACC) would find a way to scratched five more runs across, but only four of them were earned. LHP Cody Carwile then turned in 1.2 innings of one-hit scoreless work before the teams entered its second weather delay.
LHP Noah Samol then pitched the seventh and eighth, surrendering only a solo home run in the eighth.
At the plate, the Jackets were led by Jake DeLeo, who went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run in the eighth to spark the comeback attempt. Stephen Reid finished with a team-high three hits and an RBI, while John Giesler and Jack Rubenstein also tallied a hit apiece. Jadyn Jackson rounded out the scoring with an RBI walk in the sixth.
Virginia Tech was led by Clay Grady, who had three hits and three RBI. RHP Brady Kirtner (1-0) got the win, striking out five in two innings of work.
Georgia Tech returns under the lights on Saturday, April 15 as it looks to even the series. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
