Cohan, Thompson Make U.S. Amateur Field

Aug. 5, 2005

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech red-shirt freshman golfer Adam Cohan and recent graduate Nicholas Thompson will both be in the field for stroke play when the U.S. Amateur Championship begins Aug. 22 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., while incoming freshman Cameron Tringale is an alternate.

Cohan, a native of Wayne, Pa., who lives less than six miles from Merion, tied for seventh (141) at a sectional qualifier at Llanerch Country Club in Havertown, Pa.

One of three freshmen who red-shirted last year for the Yellow Jackets, Cohan tied for 28th at the Southern Amateur, and tied for 31st at the Eastern Amateur and the Southeast Amateur. A third-team All-American as a junior player in 2003, Cohan qualified for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at age 15, advancing to match play.

Thompson, who graduated from Tech with his management degree in May, is exempt into the field because he is a member of the United States team that will play in the Walker Cup matches Aug. 13-14 in Chicago. The four-time college All-American was a finalist for the Byron Nelson Award, given annually to a senior for accomplishment and sportsmanship. Thompson has previously qualified for four Amateurs, winning two matches last year at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, N.Y.

The Coral Springs, Fla., native has had a very successful amateur season, capturing the William C. Campbell Trophy for lowest aggregate score (14-under-par) from the Northeast Amateur, the Players Amateur and the Porter Cup. Thompson finished fifth at the Players Amateur, tied for fifth at the Porter Cup and tied for 18th at the Northeast Amateur. He also tied for first at the Sunnehanna Amateur but lost in a playoff to Anthony Kim, and won the Jones Cup in a playoff back in February.

Trinagle, from Laguna Niguel, Calif., shot 142 to earn an alternate spot out of the Medalist Golf Club in Marshall, Mich. The AJGA All-American has tied for ninth at the U.S. Junior Amateur and finished third at the Southern California Amateur this summer.

The U.S. Amateur begins with 36 holes of stroke play golf on Aug. 22-23, with the top 64 players advancing to match play on Aug. 24. The championship match will be played on Aug. 28.
