Karen Sugrue enters her 11th year as Office Manager/Administrative Coordinator for the Yellow Jackets women’s basketball program. She is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program including the budget and the coordination of Coach Joseph’s daily schedule. Sugrue also serves as the program’s liaison to various GTAA departments and assists in player promotions.

Sugrue brings more than 15 years of business experience to the program and came to Tech after serving as the events intern for the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in 2004 and 2005. In that role, Sugrue helped plan and execute more than 20 events operated by the Festival and More Than A Game divisions for the 2004 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. Her responsibilities included serving as the project coordinator for the 2005 Russell Athletic Shootout college women’s basketball doubleheader, which featured Georgia Tech, Georgia, Clemson and Arkansas. Prior to her stint with the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, Sugrue was a graduate assistant for the University of Georgia women’s basketball program from 2003-2004.

During the 1996 Olympic Games, Sugrue served as the athlete services coordinator for fencing overseeing the needs of the athletes at the competition venue along with coordinating athlete appearances for Coca-Cola’s Olympic City theme park. A former nationally-ranked competitive fencer, Sugrue was a volunteer coach from 2000-2003 at the Shepherd Spinal Center in Atlanta and was an Assistant Coach/Personal Care Assistant for the 2002 United States Wheelchair Fencing World Championship Team that competed in Budapest, Hungary.

Before moving into sports management, Sugrue spent over 12 years (1991-2003) working for The Coca-Cola Company as a Senior Budget Analyst and Senior Financial Analyst supporting the Media and Advertising Production departments of Coca-Cola North America’s Marketing division.

A native Georgian, Sugrue earned her bachelor’s degree in finance and master’s degree in sports management from the University of Georgia.

The former Karen Porter married Brian Sugrue on June 16, 2007. The couple resides in Peachtree Corners, Ga.
