ATLANTA – Three-time golf All-American Stewart Cink, all-time leading rebounder Malcolm Mackey and consensus baseball All-American Jay Payton headline the 2005 induction class into the Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame.
Track and field All-Americans Julian Amedee and Janeen Jones McReynolds, volleyball All-American Kerry Annel Bryan, 1940s baseball standout Henry Kalb and former basketball manager Charlie Radford also are part of the group of eight who will be officially inducted Nov. 4 in the annual Hall of Fame Dinner at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center.
“The members of this Hall of Fame class represent a particularly strong period in Georgia Tech’s athletics history in the early 1990s,” said Tech director of athletics Dave Braine, “and we’re also proud to induct a couple of men who represented Georgia Tech more than 50 years ago and are still strong supporters of our program to this day. We congratulate them all and look forward to having them with us on Nov. 4.”
Mackey, who played on two of Tech’s three Atlantic Coast Conference basketball championship teams (1990 and 1993), is the fourth member of the Yellow Jackets’ first Final Four team in 1990 to be inducted, joining Brian Oliver, Dennis Scott and Kenny Anderson. Cink, a nine-year PGA tour veteran who has played in the Ryder Cup and the President’s Cup, led Tech to three ACC championships in his four years. Payton, an eight-year Major League veteran, is the third member of the Yellow Jackets’ 1994 College World Series runner-up team to be inducted, joining Jason Varitek and Nomar Garciaparra.
Annel Bryan was a member of Tech’s first ACC regular-season champion volleyball team in 1994 and its first ACC tournament championship squad a year later, and was the first volleyball player at Tech to be named conference player of the year. Amedee and Jones McReynolds combined for nine ACC titles and seven All-America citations in track. Kalb was a star on Tech baseball teams in the immediate post-World War II era, while Radford was a manager on Tech’s basketball team under two coaches in the early 1950s and is still involved with the program today.
Julian Amedee, Men’s Track and Field (1990-93)
Member of the NCAA Champion outdoor 4×400 relay team in 1992 and indoor 4×400 relay team in 1993 … Three-time All-American in the 4×400 relay team (outdoor in 1992, indoor and outdoor in 1993) … Four-time ACC Champion in the mile relay … Member of Tech-record outdoor 4×400 relay team (1992), which still stands.
Kerry Annel Bryan, Volleyball (1992-95)
ACC Player of the Year in 1995, the first volleyball player to win the award at Georgia Tech … First team all-Atlantic Coast Conference in 1994 and 1995 … Still holds the school record for career total blocks (560) … Finished her career as the school record holder in career hitting percentage (.348) and career block assists (464) … Member of the 1995 ACC Tournament Championship team, Tech’s first conference title in volleyball … Member of ACC regular-season championship teams in 1994 and 1995 … Played on two NCAA Tournament teams, the first in school history … Named to the ACC 50th Anniversary women’s volleyball team.
Stewart Cink, Golf (1991-95)
First-team All-American in 1995 … Second-team All-American in 1993 and 1994 … All-Atlantic Coast Conference in 1993, 1994, 1995 … Consensus National Player of the Year in 1995 (Fred Haskins Award, Jack Nicklaus Trophy, Dave Williams Award) … ACC Player of the Year in 1995 … ACC Academic Honor Roll in 1992 and 1993…Won five collegiate tournaments during his career, including four during his senior year … Owned the second-best career stroke average (72.47) in Tech history when he completed his eligibility, now ranks sixth … Assisted in Tech winning 13 events during his career, including ACC championships in 1993, 1994, 1995 … Helped Tech finished sixth or better in the NCAA Championship three times in four years, including a runner-up finish in 1993 … Named to the ACC’s 50th anniversary golf team … Has played nine seasons on the PGA Tour, winning four tournaments, two of those in 2004 … Member of the United States team in the 2001 and 2004 Ryder Cup, as well as the 2000 and 2005 President’s Cup … PGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 1997.
Janeen Jones McReynolds, Track and Field (1991-94)
Four-time all-American in 400 meters and the 4×400 meter relay … Five-time ACC Champion in the 400 meters and the 4×400 meter relay … Eight-time all-ACC in the 400 meters and 4×400 meter relay … Member of school record-setting 4×400 meter relay in 1992.
Henry Kalb, Baseball (1943, 46-48)
Team captain in 1947 and a four-year letterwinner who starred on the diamond in the post-World War II era … Played the 1943 season before going into the Army for World War II … Returned to play three seasons (1946-48) after the war, pitching and playing right field … Led Tech into the Southern Championship Baseball Tournament in 1948, equivalent to a present-day NCAA regional tournament … Went 4-3 on the mound, hit .360 and led the team with 20 RBI … Posted a 4-1 pitching record and batted .304 in 1946, Tech’s first post-World War II ballclub … Was 4-2 on the mound in 1947.
Malcolm Mackey, Men’s Basketball (1990-93)
Second-team all-ACC, 1993 and third-team all-ACC ,1992 … Honorable Mention all-America in 1993 by United Press International … Second-team all-District in 1993 by the NABC … Remains Tech’s career leader in rebounds (1,205), games played (130) and games started (127) … ACC all-tournament, 1990 (3rd team) and 1992 (2nd team) … Played on two ACC championship teams (1990 and 1993) and four NCAA Tournament teams … A first-round draft pick of the Phoenix Suns in 1993.
Jay Payton, Baseball (1992-94)
Consensus first-team all-America, 1994 … First-team all-ACC, 1994 … Second-team all-ACC, 1993 … Set school records for base hits (129), doubles (27), RBI (102) and total bases (224) in a season in 1994 … Member of 1994 College World Series runner-up team … Finished career with 36 HR, 193 RBI, 43 SB, .366 avg … First-round draft pick of the New York Mets in 1994 … Has played in the major leagues for eight years, currently with the Oakland Athletics.
Charlie Radford, Men’s Basketball Manager (1948-52)
Supported and served Tech’s basketball program for more than 50 years … Manager for Tech basketball for three years, including coach Roy McArthur’s last Tech basketball team in 1950-51 and coach Whack Hyder’s first team in 1951-52, in a time when a team’s only manager was asked to be a part-time trainer, part-time sports information representative, part-time ticket manager, part-time clergyman and part-time driver … Joins five starters on the 1950-51 team previously inducted into the Hall of Fame … Involved in the basketball program’s annual lettermen’s game since its inception in the 1985-86 season, first assisting Hyder and now leading the organization of an event which has grown to attract more than 100 alumni players each year … Also organizes annual reunions of the 1950-51 team.
