Bilchev, Lee Advance at ITA Southeast Regionals

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Day two of the 2023 ITA Southeast Regionals featured the beginning of main draw action with the opening round of doubles play followed by two rounds of singles action. Two Yellow Jackets advanced to the singles round of 16, while a pair of doubles teams also secured second round spots. In total, Georgia Tech pocketed nine victories on the day.

Three doubles teams took the courts for the Yellow Jackets with two advancing to the round of 16 on Saturday. Making their first appearance as a doubles team, Given Roach and Kate Sharabura cruised to an 8-2 victory over Georgia State’s Alba Retortillo and Andreea Stanescu. Also victorious in the first round was Tech’s duo of Kylie Bilchev and Carol Lee. The doubles team dropped only one game for an 8-1 triumph over South Florida’s Melisa Senli and Grace Schumacher. Alejandra Cruz partnered with Meera Jesudason, but the pair fell, 8-3, to Victoria Gomez O’Hayon and Millie-Mae Matthews (FAU).

Following the morning session of doubles, singles play got underway. The Jackets picked up five first round victories, four coming in straight-sets. Lee quickly dispensed Alanna De Francesco (Stetson), 6-3, 6-2, while Sharabura downed Taylor Dean (KSU) by the same score after cruising through qualifying on Thursday. Bilchev and Mahak Jain were also victorious in straight sets as Bilchev collected a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Veronica Rodriguez (FAMU) and Jain downed Sofia Madrid (KSU), 6-0, 6-4. Cruz rounded out Tech’s first-round victories, edging Ema Barianakova (KSU), 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

With five Jackets advancing to the round of 32 in the afternoon, Georgia Tech picked up two more singles wins to finish with seven on the day. Bilchev and Lee remained undefeated and secured places in the round of 16 on Saturday. Bilchev rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Jaleesa Leslie (UCF), while Lee defeated Ellie Schoppe (FSU), 6-2, 6-2.

Action continues on Saturday with two rounds of doubles play followed by one round of singles. Play begins at 9 a.m. at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
