Bergmann Enters Final VNL Phase with Brazil

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech volleyball all-American Julia Bergmann has joined Brazil’s national volleyball team for summer competition, currently competing in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League. The Yellow Jacket standout has continued to make an impact internationally at the game’s highest level, starting for Brazil as one of the top producers on the squad and one of just two active NCAA players throughout the VNL encompassed of 16 countries.

Amongst the VNL, Bergmann currently leads Brazil and is eighth in the competition on serve receive (106). The rising senior also ranks top five on her squad in points (103), kills (89), blocks (nine), aces (five) and digs (56) throughout the competition.

In Brazil’s third week of competition, Bergmann once more built on her already striking international campaign with 40 total points, including 31 kills and six blocks, as well as three aces and 16 digs. Coming into the week, Tech’s all-American was prepared to face powerful serves in sequence, as evidenced by her top-10 ranking of successful receptions across the league.

“Whoever plays alongside Gabi will always be a target for the opponent’s serve,” said Bergmann. “I really like passing and training passes and, as the serve is going to be directed at me, I prepare myself beforehand. I try to do in games what I train every day.”

Despite being one of the youngest members on the squad, Tech’s all-American propelled Brazil to an undefeated week with four wins over China (3-2), Korea (3-0), Bulgaria (3-0) and Thailand (3-1). The dominant stretch resulted in a quarter-final berth in the final phase of the VNL’s competition as Brazil completed the qualifying stage placed second amongst the league with 10 wins and 29 points.

“It was an important week, the last one before the finals. China has been playing good games and has efficient attackers,” added Bergmann. “In the last week, we focused a lot on the relationship between blocking and defending. It’s a different style of play from European teams, but we studied and finalized the last adjustments.”

Bergmann opened the week with three points (two kills and an ace), three serve receives and a dig as Brazil needed every contribution to come away with a five-set win. The outside hitter followed with a monumental performance in a sweep of Korea, leading Brazil in both phases with 16 points by way of 11 kills and five blocks.

“It was an important victory that mathematically guarantees our place in the final phase,” Bergmann remarked after the victory. “We managed to get a good part of the team to play, and having this experience is very important for the group. We count on everyone’s support.”

The vaunted Yellow Jacket aided Brazil in a sweep of Bulgaria to follow with four total points, including three kills and a block, and one dig. To wrap up the week, Bergmann was dominant in all facets of a 3-1 win over Thailand as she came away with a double double behind 15 kills and 11 digs, also adding a block and an ace to lead the way with 17 total points.

“There were four wins in four games in this stage against three Asian teams and the hosts,” Bergmann remarked. “We faced different styles of play, but we managed to evolve with each game and each stage. Now we are going to fine-tune the last details for the finals in Turkey.”

Brazil will square off against Japan at 8 a.m. on Wednesday in Ankara, Turkey with an opportunity to advance to the semifinals on Saturday. The winners from Saturday will battle for the league title on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. while Friday’s losers will compete for third place at 8 a.m. The VNL’s full schedule, watch links, statistics and other pertinent information are available here.

Along with Bergmann, rising sophomore outside hitter Bianca Bertolino and incoming graduate transfer outside hitter Tali Marmen have both gained experience at the international level. Bertolino, an ACC All-Freshman Team honoree in her first collegiate season, has trained and competed with Argentina’s national team while Marmen prepares for the 2022 Maccabiah Games with Israel’s national team.
