Bergmann Bursts onto VNL Scene with Brazil

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech volleyball all-American Julia Bergmann has joined Brazil’s national volleyball team for summer competition, currently competing in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League. The Yellow Jacket standout has continued to make an impact internationally at the game’s highest level, starting for Brazil as one of the top producers on the squad and one of just two active NCAA players throughout the VNL encompassed of 16 countries.

Brazil began competition in the VNL on May 31 and has played four matches, going 3-1 over that span for nine points to tie for the third most points in the league.

Bergmann exploded out of the gate, leading Brazil to a 3-1 victory over Germany on May 31 with a team-high 19 points by way of 18 kills and a block, along with 10 digs for a double double.

“I am very happy to play in the Nations League for Brazil,” said Bergmann. “It was interesting to play against Germany in my first game. It was my first game as a starter for the adult national team, and I was a little nervous at first, but the girls helped me a lot. The vibe this team has when they’re together is incredible. We started the match well, but in the second set, we didn’t put as much pressure on the serve. Then we managed to impose our rhythm. For a debut, it was a good match.”

With the effort, the reigning ACC Player of the Year garnered praise from Brazil head coach José Roberto Guimarães.

“Julia Bergmann was very nice throughout the game, and it looked like she had been on the national team for years,” Guimarães pitched in. “She was really good. Each time, she will create more trust and understand more how everything happens on the international stage. She is an intelligent player and reads the game quickly.”

FIVB Volleyball Nations League - Week 1

To follow, the Yellow Jacket standout once again led the Brazilian squad in kills with eight to go with three digs as Brazil swept Poland on June 2. Against the Dominican Republic, Bergmann finished second on the team in points (13), kills (10) and digs (14) for her second double double of the competition as Brazil cruised to a 3-1 win on June 3. To wrap up the week’s competition, the vaunted outside hitter put up top-three numbers for the Brazilian unit with both six kills and seven digs as her side was handed its first defeat, 3-0, by the United States on June 4.

In total, Bergmann has compiled well-rounded totals of 47 points, 42 kills and 34 digs throughout the league’s competition, highlighted by her dominant performance against Germany in her first match as a starter for Brazil’s national squad. Across the league, her overall point, kill and dig totals each currently tie for 17th most.

“She’s been improving since a young age in Brazil,” added Guimarães. “She always knew what she wanted. She wanted to study in the U.S. and to go to Georgia Tech to play volleyball and study physics. She always had that in her mind and it’s really good to see how well she’s doing now. She has a big, big future.”

Bergmann and Brazil will return to the court this week, hosting VNL action in Brasilia, Brazil through the week. Brazil will compete Wednesday through Sunday, beginning with a match against Türkiye at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Brazil will follow with a match against the Netherlands at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday. With a break in the action on Friday, Brazil will return to the court to take on Italy at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday, then wrap up the week against Serbia at 9 a.m. ET on Sunday.
