Bergmann, Bertolino Sweep ACC Weekly Awards

GREENSBORO, N.C. – No. 14 Georgia Tech volleyball (21-3, 12-2 ACC) swept the individual weekly awards released by the Atlantic Coast Conference for the second time this season as junior outside hitter Julia Bergmann was named ACC Player of the Week for the second consecutive week while freshman outside hitter Bianca Bertolino was tabbed ACC Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Bergmann and Bertolino have now garnered four ACC weekly recognitions apiece, with Bergmann drawing ACC Player of the Week every occasion and Bertolino being selected ACC Freshman of the Week each time. Bergmann becomes the first student-athlete in the conference to receive ACC Player of the Week four times in a season since 2015, and Bertolino currently leads the league in ACC Freshman of the Week honors. In addition to this season’s accolades, Bergmann is up to five career ACC Player of the Week honors and seven total Atlantic Coast Conference weekly awards after earning ACC Freshman of the Week twice in her first season on The Flats.

The Jackets have now racked up 10 ACC weekly awards on the year, the most in program history on record. The staggering tally leads the league this season as senior outside hitter Mariana Brambilla also owns two ACC Player of the Week honors. Georgia Tech has had at least one recipient of an ACC weekly award in seven of the 10 weeks the conference has recognized winners this season.

Bergmann receives the honor after fueling Georgia Tech to another undefeated weekend in ACC play with 3-1 wins over Miami and Florida State. A key component of Tech’s 10-game winning streak in conference play, Bergmann piled up 20+ kills in both matches, totaling a team-leading 41 kills (5.12 per set) at a .353 clip along with three aces, 15 digs and a team-high tying nine total blocks (two solo, seven assisted) on the weekend.

The powerful outside hitter opened the weekend with a team-high tying 21 kills behind a solid .436 hitting percentage while adding an ace as well as six digs and four block assists (second on the team) on the defensive end to power the Jackets past the Hurricanes. Bergmann followed that with a team-leading 20 kills and a pair of aces while again assisting defensively with nine digs and the second most total blocks on the squad with five (two solo, three assisted) to lead Tech over Florida State. Amongst the ACC in four-set matches, her 21 kills against the Hurricanes tie for the third most this season while her 25.5 points against Florida State mark the second most points to date.

Bertolino contributed across the board to help propel Georgia Tech to its unbeaten weekend slate, tallying 19 kills at an efficient .395 clip (second on the squad) while aiding defensively with 20 digs and six total blocks (one solo, five assisted) for the third most on the team in both categories. The young Jacket kicked off the weekend with nine kills, 10 digs and four total blocks (one solo, three assisted) for her first balanced line of the weekend against Miami. Bertolino followed that with her eighth double double of the season against Florida State as she came away with 10 kills, 10 digs and a pair of block assists.
