GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech women’s basketball freshman Elizabeth Balogun earned one of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s highest honors on Wednesday morning when she was named the ACC Rookie of the Year. Balogun earned the prestigious honor from both the Blue Ribbon Panel and the league’s head coaches.
Balogun is one of two freshmen to start all 29 contests for Georgia Tech this season. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.8 points per game and has scored in double figures 24 times. She has led the Jackets in scoring 13 times and produced two 30-plus point outings. She became the first Yellow Jacket freshman in the 21st century to score 35 points when she recorded the career high at North Carolina on January 31.
A four-time ACC Rookie of the Week, Balogun owns two double-doubles in her inaugural campaign, including an 18-point, 17-rebound performance at Boston College to open ACC play in January. Balogun leads all ACC freshmen and ranks eighth nationally among freshman in scoring. She was also named to the ACC All-Freshman Team on Tuesday.
Balogun becomes just the third Yellow Jacket in program history to earn the award, joining Francesca Pan (2017) and Niesha Butler (1999) on the elite list.
Georgia Tech opens the 2019 ACC Tournament on Thursday at 2 p.m., facing 8th-seeded North Carolina. The game will be televised on RSN, locally on Fox Sports South in Atlanta.
