Bakker And Murton Named Freshman All-America

June 7, 2001

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech pitcher Kyle Bakker (Omaha, Neb.) and outfielder Matt Murton (McDonough, Ga.) were both named first-team Freshman All-America by Collegiate Baseball magazine.

Bakker went 4-1 with a team-low 2.78 earned run average in 16 appearances, including five starting assignments, during the 2001 season. The 6-9 southpaw struck out 49 batters and allowed just nine walks in 45.1 innings, while picking up victories over nationally-ranked Florida State, Clemson and Auburn.

Murton led the Yellow Jackets with a .385 average in 47 games, with 14 doubles, seven home runs and 35 RBI. After beginning the season as a reserve, he worked his way into the regular starting lineup at the DH spot and in left field for the second half of the season.

Bakker and Murton helped lead the Yellow Jackets to a 41-20 record in 2001 while earning a spot in the NCAA regionals for the 16th time in the last 17 years.
