Complete Monday qualifying results
Braselton, Ga. – Georgia Tech golfer Anders Albertson shot a 3-under-par 69 and advanced out of the United States Open local qualifier held Monday at the Legends at Chateau Elan.
Albertson, a senior from Woodstock, Ga., earned one of the seven available qualifying spots in the field of 132 golfers, which included four of his current Yellow Jacket teammates – James Clark, Jacob Joiner, Chris Petefish and Vincent Whaley – and former Tech All-American Kyle Scott. Scott carded a 2-under-par 70 and missed qualifying by one shot and lost a six-player playoff for two available alternate spots.
Spencer Ralston of Gainesville, Ga., a rising senior at Gainesville High School, earned medalist honors with a 5-under-par 67. The other qualifiers included 2013 Georgia Amateur champion and current Kennesaw State Owl Jimmy Beck of Columbus, Ga. (68), professional Paul Apyan of Chattanooga, Tenn. (68), professional Adam Hart of Columbia, S.C. (69), professional RIchard Swift of Australia (69) and professional Michael Hebert of Powder Springs, Ga. (69).
Albertson, who earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors for the fourth time in his career earlier Monday, is ranked 34th in this week’s Golfweek/Sagarin Index and No. 41 in Golfstat. He has won two collegiate events this spring, including co-medalist honors at the ACC Championship, and is the 2015 winner of the Byron Nelson Award as the nation’s top graduating senior golfer.
Monday’s event was the first of two 18-hole qualifiers for the 2015 U.S. Open Championship will be conducted by the Georgia State Golf Association and one of 111 local qualifiers taking place nationwide from May 4-21.
A second local qualifier in Georgia will take place Tuesday, May 12, at The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta. Eight current or former Tech players are in that field, including 2015 graduate Drew Czuchry, rising junior Michael Hines, rising sophomore Michael Pisciotta, incoming freshmen Tyler Joiner and Tye Waller, and former Tech stars Bo Andrews, John-Tyler Griffin and James White.
Players advancing out of the local qualifiers will compete in sectional qualifying, consisting of 36 holes of stroke play, conducted at two international sites on May 25 (Japan and England) and 12 United States sites on June 8, including Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground, Ga. Another Georgia Tech senior, Ollie Schniederjans, is exempt into the U.S. Open field as the winner of the 2014 Mark McCormack Medal, given to the nation’s top amateur player.
The 115th U.S. Open Championship will be held at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash., June 15-21. Entries were open to any professional and to amateurs with USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 1.4. The U.S. Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
