12 Postseason Participants Highlight Tech's 07-08 Women's Basketball Schedule

Aug. 22, 2007

ATLANTA – Twelve postseason participants, including seven that played in the 2007 NCAA Tournament, highlight the 2007-08 Georgia Tech women’s basketball schedule, announced Wednesday by the Atlantic Coast Conference.

“This season’s schedule is without question the most competitive we have had in our five years at Tech,” Head Coach MaChelle Joseph said. “We have aggressively gone after some top non-conference opponents with two conference champions in Tulane (Conference-USA) and Harvard (Ivy League). In addition, we have seven teams that participated in the NCAA tournament on the 2007-08 schedule.”

The Yellow Jackets, who finished last season with a Division-I school-best 21 wins (21-12) and the programs first NCAA Tournament victory, will raise its NCAA banner at home on Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. against Davidson in a men’s and women’s double-header (the men’s game against UNC-Greensboro will begin at 6 p.m.). Tech will then travel to New Orleans Nov. 13 for a meeting with the Tulane Green Wave. Both the Wildcats and the Green Wave are coming off appearances in the 2007 Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

The Jackets’ tough November continues with a homestand against Temple on the 18th (2 p.m.) and Northwestern of the Big Ten on the 21st (7 p.m.). Tech travels to Iowa Nov. 28 to participate in the inaugural Big Ten/ACC Challenge against the Hawkeyes, which will be televised by the Big Ten Network.

Tech’s challenging schedule rolls over into December with a road game Dec. 2 at NCAA participant and in-state rival Georgia. The Southeastern Conference is represented on Tech’s schedule again at Mississippi State Dec. 16. In the Jackets’ final game before Christmas, they travel across town to face Georgia State Dec. 22.

Tech will host its 10th Annual Holiday Tournament Dec. 29-30, as the Jackets will face Chicago State at 1 p.m. in the first round before facing either Harvard or Kennesaw State the following day.

“I am excited about how this schedule will challenge our young and talented team early on,” Joseph added. “These games will give us the type of experience the will prepare this team for rigors of the tough ACC schedule.”

Tech will kickoff its ACC schedule in a televised match-up at North Carolina Jan. 5. The game will be broadcast on the ACC’s Regional Sports Network (RSN), which includes FSN South, Comcast SportsNet, SunSports and New England Sports Network.

In all, the Yellow Jackets will have five games broadcast on RSN, all of which will be conference match-ups. Tech’s second RSN game is Feb. 3 when the Jackets host Florida State at Alexander Memorial Coliseum at 4:00 p.m. Tech will have three other games broadcast on RSN in the month of February, against North Carolina at home Feb. 10, Feb. 18th at Boston College and Feb. 29 in Atlanta against Virginia Tech.

“We are thrilled to have five televised games on the ACC’s Regional Sports Network scheduled for this season,” said Joseph.

Besides playing their home-and-away contests against permanent ACC rivals Clemson, Miami and North Carolina, the Yellow Jackets will also host Duke, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech and Florida State. Tech rounds out its ACC schedule with trips to Boston College, Maryland, NC State and Virginia during the season.

Last season, the Jackets upset fourth-ranked Maryland 77-72 and upended NC State 69-62 at home.

Tech’s non-conference games include meetings against South Carolina Upstate (Dec. 6), Georgia Southern (Dec. 9), Jackson State (Jan. 2) and Savannah State (Feb. 12), and a trip to Mississippi Valley State (Dec. 18).

Overall, the Jackets’ 2007-08 schedule includes six contests against teams that advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 and beyond.
