TULSA, Okla. – Georgia Tech Men’s Tennis won two of their three singles matches Thursday in the first round Main Draw of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa.
Junior David North earned his 6th win in Tulsa when he downed Nicolas Delgado of Illinois, 7-6 (2), 6-4. The Durban, South Africa native is also scheduled to compete in Thursday’s Doubles Main Draw with teammate Eric Molnar. North will resume singles competition Friday when he takes on No. 4 seed Somdev Devvarman of Virginia.
Molnar was also victorious in singles play Thursday defeating Minnesota’s D.J. Gaetz, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Molnar will face Virginia’s Treat Huey in Friday’s second round of the Main Draw. Jordan Delass suffered Tech’s only loss when he was defeated, 6-2, 6-2 by Kevin Anderson of Illinois.
The Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships include five days of qualifying events that precede the October 5-8 main draw. The 128-player prequalifying tournament took place Sept. 30-Oct. 1. This fed into 128-player and 64-doubles team qualifying tournaments Oct. 2-5, which then feeds into the 64-player, 32-doubles team main draws.
The Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships offer the first national singles and doubles titles of the 2006-07 collegiate tennis season, and are followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
