Jan. 29, 2003

ATLANTA – Led by a pair of victories from senior Jaime Wong, the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team opened its dual-match campaign with a 7-0 win over Georgia State on Wednesday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. The Yellow Jackets did not drop a set in the match.

Wong picked up her first win of the day for the Yellow Jackets (1-0) at No.1 doubles, as she teamed with rookie Kelly Anderson to claim an 8-4 win over the Panthers’ (0-2) duo of Anna Maria Forgacs and Anne Breitholtz. Tech won the doubles point in the match when Catherine Gunn and Maria Nieto defeated Rebecca Mitchell and Karmelina Rivera by an 8-0 count. An 8-3 win by rookies Annelies Schenk and Lyndsay Shosho at No. 3 over Karine Etienne and Christina O’Neal gave the Jackets a sweep of doubles competition.

In singles play, Wong was again the story as she rolled at No. 1 to a perfect straight-set victory over Forgacs. Wong won the both sets by scores of 6-0, 6-0. Gunn picked up her second victory of the day at No. 2 singles, defeating Breitholtz in straight sets by matching 6-3, 6-3 scores.

Schenk clinched the victory for the Yellow Jackets at No. 3 singles, as she won the first set against Karmelina Rivera by a 6-1 score, before rallying from a 5-1 deficit in the second set to claim a 7-5 win. Fellow rookie Anderson was equally impressive in her Tech debut as she rolled past Mitchell at No. 4 singles, winning the match with ease, 6-0, 6-0.

The final two singles winners of the day for the Jackets were freshmen Lyndsay Shosho and Maria Nieto, who both claimed straight-set victories. Shosho downed O’Neal by scores of 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, while Nieto defeated Etienne by a 6-1, 6-0 count.

Georgia Tech will return to action this weekend when it travels to face South Alabama on Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. and Auburn on Feb. 2 at 1 p.m.
