Tech Tennis Sweeps Princeton in Season Opener

Jan. 28, 2005

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech opened its 2005 season with a 7-0 win over the Princeton Tigers. Freshman David North was a perfect 2-0 on the day to lead the Jackets past the Tigers.

“I thought it was a good match for us,” head coach Kenny Thorne stated. “We started out a little slow in the doubles. Princeton moved well together and put the pressure on us. We struggled in No. 1 doubles, but at No. 2 and No. 3 we got put under a lot of pressure and the guys responded. A couple of freshmen had to step up under pressure and they did. That is going to be key for us the whole year.”

David North picked up victories in both No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles to help lead Tech to a sweep over Princeton. In doubles action, the freshman teamed with Marko Rajevac to help clinch the doubles point for the Jackets, 8-6. Then in singles, the Durban, South Africa native won in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) to pace Tech.

No. 25 Jose Luis Muguruza was a straight set winner also, as he clinched the victory for the Jackets (6-4, 6-4).

In other singles action, Rajevac claimed a straight set win of his own, downing Princeton’s Hans Plukas 6-0, 6-4. Freshmen Jordan Delass and Sukhwa Young both won in straight sets, while sophomore Zachary Rath won in a tie breaker, 11-9.

The Jackets began the afternoon by winning the doubles point. The first match of the afternoon saw Princeton’s Josh Burman and Darius Craton upending Tech’s No. 1 duo of Muguruza and Young. In the No. 3 spot, Scott Blackmon and Rath edged out Ted Mabrey and Sratha Saengsuwarn 8-5. In the deciding match, North and Rajevac edged out Andrew Lieu and Plukas 8-6 to claim the doubles point.

The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team returns to action on Sunday, February 6, when they host Wofford and Georgia Southern. The Jackets open the day with the Terriers at 9 a.m., and then play host to the Eagles at 3 p.m.
