Tech Steady at 10 in AVCA Top 25

LEXINGTON, Ky. Georgia Tech volleyball (17-4, 10-2 ACC) has been ranked No. 10 in the AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Women’s Poll, the organization announced on Monday. The White and Gold’s third straight week in the top 10 ties the seventh highest ranking received by the Yellow Jackets in program history, joining the 2003 squad.

Georgia Tech’s selection marks the eighth appearance in the AVCA’s top 10 in 11 polls this season.

Reappearing in the top 25 for the first time since 2005 at No. 12 on Sept. 30, 2020, Tech has since been listed in 49 straight top 25 polls to date.

Tech is one of three ACC teams inside the top 10 alongside No. 5 Louisville and No. 7 Pitt. Throughout the Jackets’ gauntlet, the White and Gold have already faced four top-10 opponents this season, including a sweep of formerly No. 10 BYU. Georgia Tech is still slated for a pair of rematches against the Cardinals and the Panthers.

Each of the aforementioned teams reached the NCAA Tournament in 2021 as Louisville and Pitt each advanced to the Final Four while BYU and previous foe No. 6 Ohio State both played into the Sweet 16. The Jackets eliminated the Buckeyes during their Elite Eight run.

As a unit, Georgia Tech is currently second in the ACC in both kills per set (13.96) and assists per set (13). The Yellow Jackets are also sitting third in the league in opponent hitting percentage (.162) and digs per set (14.50). On the offensive side of the net, Tech is fourth in the conference in hitting percentage (.255).

Individually, senior outside hitter Julia Bergmann recently added her third ACC Player of the Week title of the season. The heavy hitter continues to lead the ACC in kills per set (5.32) as well as points per set (5.93), ranking second in the NCAA in both. She also tops the conference and is top 15 in the country in total kills (383) and points (427).

Bergmann continues to climb deeper into the Tech record books as she recently became the fifth Yellow Jacket ever to join the 1,500 kill/1,000 dig club, eclipsing 1,000 digs against North Carolina to meet the mark. The renowned attacker is currently ninth in program history in career kills (1,576) and fifth in program history in career aces (152).

Tech has won 75 of its last 91 matches dating back to 2019. The Yellow Jackets have also won 47 of their last 53 matches at home in O’Keefe Gymnasium, earning the program’s 300th win inside the raucous arena earlier this season.

Georgia Tech will next move onto the back end of its road swing, making a Florida trip to take on Miami (13-9, 6-5 ACC) on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. in Coral Gables, Fla. before concluding the stint at Florida State (20-10, 11-7 ACC) on Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. in Tallahassee, Fla. Both matches will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.

Competitive Drive Initiative

In a unified endeavor, Georgia Tech, the Georgia Tech Foundation, Georgia Tech athletics and the Alexander-Tharpe Fund have come together to accelerate funding for student-athlete scholarships with the launch of the Competitive Drive Initiative. The initiative kicks off with the Accelerate GT Match Program, where any new gift to the A-T Fund’s Athletic Scholarship Fund made through Dec. 31 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Georgia Tech Foundation, up to $2.5 million. Should Accelerate GT reach its $2.5 million fundraising goal, the matching gift would result in a $5 million impact for Georgia Tech athletics.
