Tech Men's Tennis Falls to Georgia, 4-3

Feb. 14, 2003

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team was unable to rally after being swept in doubles play and dropped it’s second-straight match as it fell to in-state rival Georgia by a 4-3 score on Friday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

The Yellow Jackets (2-2) fell behind the Bulldogs (1-3) early on, dropping all three of the day’s doubles matches. Georgia’s team of Bo Hodge and Nicolas Boeker downed Tech’s tandem of West Nott and Scott Schnugg at No.1 doubles by an 8-5 score, before UGA’s duo of Strahinja Bobusic and Will Glenn clinched the point with an 8-5 win over the Jackets’ Joao Menano and Marko Rajevac.

In singles play, Tech won the first completed match at No. 2, as Schnugg won the first set over Boeker by a 6-3 score, before Boeker retired from the match with an injury. Georgia then clinched the overall win in the match with victories at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 1 singles. Hodge won the deciding match at No. 1, as he downed the Jackets’ Roger Anderson in three sets. Anderson won the first match by a 6-2 score, before dropping the second, by a matching 6-2 score. Hodge then took control for a 6-3, third-set win.

The Jackets’ other two wins on the day came at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, as Tech’s Menano downed Stephan Timu when Timu defaulted from the match after winning the opening set by a 7-5 score. West Nott was the final winner for the Yellow Jackets, as he won the first set from Georgia’s Jason Varella by a 7-5 score, before Varella defaulted from the match.

Georgia Tech will return to action on Sunday, when it hosts ninth-ranked Texas at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in a match that will get under way at noon. Full results of the match will be available at www.ramblinwreck.com.
