Tech Hosts Charlotte for Senior Weekend

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (33-12, 11-10 ACC) will host Charlotte (26-17, 7-11 C-USA) for Senior Weekend, beginning its final home series of the regular season with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 3 p.m. at Mewborn Field.

Promotions

The doubleheader on Saturday will serve as Autism Awareness Day, accompanied by a t-shirt giveaway. Sunday will be focused on Senior Weekend, featuring pregame recognition and a postgame celebration for the Yellow Jacket seniors.

Storylines

• Georgia Tech has outscored its opponents 267-149 to date.
• Tech got off to a 15-2 start on the year, the best for the program in 12 years. The 2010 Yellow Jackets started off 20-2 on the way to regular season and ACC tournament titles, making an NCAA regional appearance.
• The White and Gold won their first 11 straight home games, tying the 1991 Yellow Jackets for the best home start in program history.
• Since, the Yellow Jackets have gone 33-12 for the best start since 2011. That squad started 34-7, winning the ACC regular season title and advancing to an NCAA regional.
• Georgia Tech recently won nine straight games, including six in ACC play, for the program’s highest win streak since claiming 12 straight in 2012. The Jackets have lately won six straight and eight of their last nine.
• The White and Gold have won four ACC series, topping Louisville, claiming their first ACC series sweep of the season against Syracuse, taking two of three over Boston College and earning their second ACC series sweep over NC State.
• The Jackets have dominated their recent opponents in NC State, Troy and Georgia State, outscoring the the three 28-3 through the three-game series.
• Tech tied a season high swatting three home runs against Troy on Tuesday.
• Against NC State, graduate first baseman Tricia Awald blasted two home runs in the series as she now leads the team with eight this season.
• Junior catcher Emma Kauf was a near flawless 7-for-8 with two doubles and a triple against NC State, earning ACC Player of the Week for her efforts.
• With Kauf’s second double, she moved into fourth in program history in doubles in a season with 18 this year.
• Junior hurler Chandler Dennis earned two of the three wins in the circle, as she’s now up to a team-high 14 victories on the year. She allowed no earned runs on four hits for a flawless ERA with 13 strikeouts and a .091 batting average after tossing her second complete game one-hitter of the season in game three.
• Dennis previously put together a 4-0 week that resulted in ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week honors.
• Against Boston College in game two, the White and Gold piled up a season-high 16 hits on their way to their eighth mercy-rule victory on the year, 14-2 in five innings. The 14 runs were the second highest tally of the season for Tech.
• Georgia Tech owns three walk-off victories this season over Penn State, Dartmouth and Syracuse (excluding by way of mercy-rule).
• The Yellow Jackets have won nine games by mercy rule this season, including seven in just five innings.
• The White and Gold went a perfect 6-0 against in-state opponents this season after defeating Mercer, Georgia State twice, Georgia and Kennesaw State twice.
• The Yellow Jackets have shut out nine opponents this season.
• Tech is undefeated at 27-0 when holding opponents to two runs or less.
• The Jackets are 25-5 when scoring first and 28-4 when out hitting opponents.
• Tech owns a 22-2 record against nonconference opponents as well as a 21-6 record in all home contests.
• The Yellow Jackets tout six wins tallying double digit runs on the year.
• The White and Gold own three extra-inning victories of the season.
• Georgia Tech claimed its second ranked victory of the year in its series opener against No. 25 Notre Dame, using a four-run rally in the top of the seventh to come out on top, 9-8. The two ranked wins mark the most for the program in a single season since 2015.
• The victory marked the Jackets’ first road victory over the Fighting Irish in the history of the series. Tech also tallied 34 runs in the series, the most in a single series this season.
• Georgia Tech picked up its first ranked win of the season over then No. 16 Georgia. Previously, the most recent ranked win for the Jackets came a season ago, downing No. 15 Virginia Tech on the road.
• Tech owns 66 ranked wins all time, including six top-10 triumphs, two top-five victories and one top-three win in the history of the program.
• Junior designated player Caroline Davis belted Tech’s second grand slam of the year against the Bulldogs following Awald’s same feat against Villanova (Feb. 12). The grand slam marked Davis’ first of her career as she’s up to six dingers this season and seven through her career.
• Awald has gotten a hit in 33 games and reached base in Tech’s first 19 games this season. She’s reached in 42 of the Jackets’ 45 games on the year.
• Junior Blake Neleman tossed a career-high 13 strikeouts in the season opener against Saint Joseph’s, fanning 12 of the 13 batters on the way to a complete game win. Neleman nearly matched that total against Mississippi State with 12 punchouts in another complete game win over Mississippi State and recently hurled nine straight innings against Boston College, sitting down 10 batters as Tech came out on top in extras.
• With five strikeouts in game two against Louisville, Neleman surpassed 300 career punchouts as well as her previous career high of 111 sit downs in a season. She owns 171 total this season and 359 throughout her career.
• Neleman owns nine complete game wins, two shutouts and a 13-6 record with four saves in 34 appearances on the year.
• The Jackets are currently among the nation’s most efficient at the plate and near the top of the league in multiple categories – leading the NCAA in walks (209), 12th in the land and second in the league in on-base percentage (0.409) and 23rd in the country and top five in the conference in doubles on the season (63).
• In the field, Tech is currently third in the league and 23^rd in the nation in fielding percentage at 0.973 to date.
• Awald is among the nation’s best at the dish, currently seventh in the country and leading the conference in on-base percentage (.583) while sitting atop the nation in walks per game (1.02). Similarly, she’s been dinged the second most times in the league with a 0.24 average of getting hit by pitches per game.
• Already Georgia Tech’s program leader in career walks with 163 to date, Awald has moved up to third in Tech history in walks in a season with 46 this year.
• Awald nearly owns another crown in the Jacket record books as she recently knocked her 53^rd career double against UAB, moving into a tie with Kelsi Weseman (2009-12) for most career doubles in program history.
• Junior catcher Emma Kauf has excelled in hits for extra bases, sitting in second in the NCAA and atop the ACC in doubles (18) to move to fourth in program history in doubles through a season. She’s also ninth in the land and leads the conference in hits (59) and fourth in the league in total bases (99), leading the squad in both.
• To date, Neleman is 27th in the country and second in the conference in strikeouts (171) while ranking 26^th in the nation and second in the ACC in innings pitched (146 2/3). She’s also 11^th in the country and third in the conference with four saves.

Series Notes

• Georgia Tech leads Charlotte 17-10-1 in the all-time series.
• The Yellow Jackets dominated the series from 1992-96, winning 14 straight for the longest streak of the series.
• The most recent win for the White and Gold came in 1999 as they downed the 49ers on the road, 5-1.
• The White and Gold most notably hold an 8-2 advantage in neutral contests while leading 3-2-1 on The Flats and being tied 6-6 on the road.
