Six Yellow Jackets in Inaugural Class for Georgia HS Football Hall of Fame

THE FLATS – Six student-athletes that went on to attend Georgia Tech have been selected for the inaugural class of Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame, which was announced on Thursday. Clint Castleberry, Bill Curry, Stan Gann, Calvin Johnson, George Maloof and Larry Morris all represent Tech among the 45 initial members of the Hall.

Castleberry (HB, Atlanta Boys H.S., 1941), Maloof (E, Marist School, 1947), Morris (RB/LB, Decatur H.S., 1950), Gann (QB, Atlanta Northside H.S., 1957), Curry (L, College Park H.S., 1959) and Johnson (WR, Sandy Creek H.S., 2003) all enjoyed great success on the gridiron at Georgia Tech following their hall-of-fame prep careers. Castleberry, Morris, Curry and Johnson were all-Americans at Tech. Maloof’s scored four touchdowns in a 48-6 win over Georgia in 1951, which remained a Georgia Tech single-game record until 2017. Gann was a two-year starter at quarterback and led the Yellow Jackets to a 7-4 record and No. 13 final national ranking in 1961. In recognition of their achievements at Georgia Tech, Morris and Johnson were inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1992 and 2018, respectively.

Following their collegiate careers, Curry, Morris and Johnson all went on to enjoy prolific National Football League careers of 10, 12 and nine seasons, respectively. Following his nine seasons with the Detroit Lions, Johnson was first-ballot selection to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021. Curry won two Super Bowls and three NFL championships with the Green Bay Packers and Baltimore Colts and was a two-time Pro Bowler, before embarking on a 20-year career as a college head coach, including seven seasons at Georgia Tech (1980-86). Morris won an NFL championship with the Chicago Bears and was a member of the NFL’s all-decade team for the 1960s and the Bears’ list of their top 100 players of all-time, which was announced in 2019.

Castleberry never had the opportunity to play professional football, as he lost his life as a pilot during World War II in 1944.

The inaugural class of the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame will be inducted on Oct. 22 at the College Football Hall of Fame in downtown Atlanta.
