Pieters and Schnugg lead Tech's Men's Tennis Over Georgia State, 6-1

ATLANTA – Jason Pieters and Scott Schnugg won in third set tiebreakers to lead Georgia Tech (5-2) to a 6-1 victory over cross-town rival Georgia State (5-3) on Wednesday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Yellow Jackets won the doubles point to begin the afternoon behind wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Roger Anderson and Schnugg won at No. 1 by a 9-7 score over the Panthers’ duo of Luka Bernard and Miha Lisac while Joao Menano and Pieters teamed at the No. 2 slot to earn a win over Chris Magnone and Nicolas Lupica, 8-6.

Tech then took five of six singles matches from Georgia State, led by three-setters by Schnugg, Pieters, and West Nott. No. 21 Roger Anderson began the singles play with a 6-2, 7-1 victory over No. 95 Matias Ormaza at the No. 1 singles position to put Tech up 2-0 in the match. At the No. 2 position, Schnugg dropped the first set 4-6, but then rebounded with back-to-back tiebreak wins in the next two sets to put Tech up 3-0. Jason Pieters then clinched the match at the No. 3 singles slot with a 7-6 win in the third set of his match.

Other singles winners for the Jackets were West Nott at the No. 5 slot and Fabio Campos at the No. 6 position. Campos won a tiebreaker in the first set and then took the second set, 6-0. Nott dropped the first set 6-7 before coming back to win the second by a 6-1 score, and he followed that with a 10-4 win in a third set tiebreaker.

Tech’s only loss on the afternoon came at the No. 4 position as Georgia State’s Bernard won in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5 over Tech’s Menano.

Georgia Tech will return to action on March 1st against NC State at home in its first ACC matchup of the year. The match will begin at 12 noon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
