West Nott posted victories at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles as the No. 35 Georgia Tech men’s tennis team swept NC State Saturday afternoon in Raleigh, NC. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 12-5, 4-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference action while the Wolfpack falls to 5-11, 1-4 in ACC play.
The Yellow Jackets opened the match winning the doubles point as the eleventh ranked duo of Scott Schnugg and Marko Rajevac defeated the tandem of Jon Davis and Will Shaw 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. Tech then earned the point as at No. 2 doubles, Nott and Jason Pieters teamed together to beat Conor Taylor and Andre Iriarte by a 8-5 score. At No. 3 doubles, Val Banada and William Nobblitt combined to defeat Tech’s Jose Muguruza and Zacahary Rath, 8-3.
Tech carried its momentum into singles, posting victories in all six matches. At No. 1 singles, 65th-ranked Schnugg defeated No. 75 Taylor in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 while at No. 2 singles, No. 100 Muguruza held on to beat Banada, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. At No. 3 singles, Pieters outlasted Shaw, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-2 while at No. 4 singles, Nott disposed of Iriarte 6-3, 6-4. In the final two singles matches on the day, Rath defeated Davis in straight sets at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 6-2 while at No. 6 singles Rajevac beat Nobblitt, 7-5, 6-4.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Sunday when they travel to Chapel Hill to take on #19 North Carolina (17-2, 3-0) at 1 p.m. Livestats will be available for the match at tarheelblue.com.
