No. 35 Georgia Tech Men's Tennis Fights Back to Defeat No. 45 North Carolina, 4-3

Jose Muguruza held on to defeat Brad Pomeroy at No. 1 singles in three sets, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3 to lead the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team to a dramatic 4-3 win over No. 45 North Carolina Tar Heels. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 13-8, 5-5 Atlantic Coast Conference while the Tar Heels fall to 14-9, 4-6 ACC.

The Jackets took the early lead 1-0 taking the doubles point by winning at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles. North Carolina jumped in front as the team of Jonathan Janda and Raian Luchici won 8-3 over the team of Muguruza and Sukhwa Young at the No. 2 doubles position. Tech fought back from the No. 3 position as Zachary Rath and Scott Blackmon beat Seabastian Guejman and Derek Porter 8-2. The concluding match pitted two ranked doubles teams, with Tech’s No. 52 team of Marko Rajevac and David North defeating the No. 41 team of Geoff Boyd and Pomeroy 9-8 (2) in a tie-break after the Jacket duo had trailed 7-6 in the match.

Tech then took a 2-0 lead as Marko Rajevac won at No. 3 singles over Geoff Boyd in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (6). The Tar Heels then built a 3-2 lead as Derek Porter defeated Jordan Delass at No. 5, 6-1, 7-6 (5), Jonathan Luchici won at No. 2 over David North, 6-2, 6-4 and Sebastian Guejman held on to defeat George Gvelesiani in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. The Jackets then tied the match at 3-3 as Zachary Rath came back to defeat Johnathan Janda, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action Thursday at 3 p.m. when they face Maryland in the quarterfinals as the No. 6 seed in the ACC Tournament, held in Cary, NC.
