ATLANTA – The 25th-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team (12-10, 6-5 ACC) will begin its quest for a fifth ACC Tournament title on Thursday when the Yellow Jackets take on the Maryland Terrapins (7-14, 1-10 ACC) in a 3 p.m. match at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C.
Georgia Tech enters the ACC Championships having won its last three matches and the Yellow Jackets defeated the Terps 5-2 March 23 in College Park, Md.
The Yellow Jackets four previous titles have come in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010. In 2010, the Yellow Jackets went into the tournament as the No. 7 seed and defeated three teams in the tournament which had defeated Tech in the regular season.
Tech is led by senior Jillian O’Neill who is ranked No. 14 in singles play and No. 16 in doubles play with partner Alex Anghelescu. O’Neill owns nine singles wins over ranked opponents this season, while her and Anghelescu have seven doubles wins over ranked foes.
Maryland’s only ranked singles player is sophomore Cristina Stancu who is No. 26 in the latest Campbell’s/ITA Division I tennis rankings. The Terps’ top doubles team of junior Ana Belzunce and sophomore Welma Luus is ranked No. 20 nationally.
